About Citronella Ants
Citronella ants are also known as big yellow ants or moisture ants. The worker ants are known for their lemon scent when crushed, this citronella scent is where they get their name from.
Ant Identification
Size & Color: The males are about 4 mm in length and the females are double their in size, 8 mm. They are yellow to a yellowish-brown color. The winged males are black.
Habits: They make mounds of dirt as they dig galleries underground. They can nest beneath wood piles, under slabs of concrete, along foundations and can be found inside a home where fungus or moisture has rotted the wood.
Behaviour: Winged females and males are known as swarmer’s and can become a nuisance once they leave their nests to begin their mating flight. After mating the males will die off and the female will carry on to be queens of their own colony.
